The computing hall of a physics research centre north of Moscow on a winter afternoon, pale snow light through double windows, four tall light grey-green cabinets in a shallow arc, their open fronts showing tiers of grey plug-in cells behind glass, before each cabinet a sloping light grey control desk with a red-brown veneered ledge, rows of push buttons in green, red, orange, yellow and blue, black rotary knobs and small glowing lamps, every button blank and every surface plain and unmarked, plain fanfold paper on one ledge, a hand in a brown knitted cardigan sleeve pressing a green button.
