The seventy-two inch Rosse reflector at Birr Castle: a huge wooden tube about fifty-four feet long standing steeply tilted between two tall parallel masonry walls, its lower end resting on a universal joint on the ground at the foot of the walls and its open upper end raised high above the wall tops toward the evening sky, the tube leaning like a great cannon aimed upward, held by chains running over pulleys on the walls to counterweights, a wooden observing gallery spanning between the walls near the top, the walls about forty feet high with the tube rising past them, castle parkland around the mounting.
