The Works Outing

A works outing on a village common: long tables of families laid with food, the men in dark suits, waistcoats, bowler hats or cloth caps, the women in long skirts, high-necked blouses and straw hats, the children in pinafores and sailor suits, a tug of war rope stretched across the grass, the decorated horse-drawn waggon that carried them there standing at the edge of the common with its horses, the cottages around the common with small-paned sash windows.

- Der Werksausflug der Brauerei Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton in Burton-on-Trent, mit Sonderzügen an die See. Die Heritage Railway datiert den Beginn auf 1865, "as relatively modest affairs requiring just two trains", und zunächst "restricted to employees"; von 1884 bis 1914 fuhr der Ausflug jährlich. Ziele waren Blackpool, Liverpool, Scarborough und ab 1893 Great Yarmouth, 182 Meilen entfernt. Bis 1913 stieg die Zahl der Mitfahrer von 8.000 auf 10.000 und die der Züge auf sechzehn. Bass beschäftigte 1888 nach der Victoria County History 2.760 "men and boys" — die Mehrheit der Mitfahrer waren also Angehörige und eingeladene Kunden, nicht Beschäftigte.
- Was daran neu war
- Für 1895 selbst zeigt sich keine belastbare Neuerung. Die Quelle nennt Zahlen für 1865, 1893 und 1913; 1895 liegt dazwischen und ist nicht belegt; nach Great Yarmouth ging es laut Quelle 1893 und dann alle vier Jahre bis 1913. Belegbar ist die Verschiebung: aus zwei Zügen für Beschäftigte wurde ein Ereignis, das einen großen Teil einer Stadt an einem Tag über 182 Meilen bewegte und zurückholte — nach der Quelle die größten Veranstaltungen dieser Art, die ein Privatunternehmen weltweit ausrichtete. Der Preis steht in derselben Quelle: zuerst nur Beschäftigte, später durften Frau und Kinder mit, "on payment of the extra fares". Der Mann fuhr frei, seine Familie zahlte. 1914 brach die Reihe ab.
