A family shoe shop in Milwaukee before opening time on a sunny Saturday morning, walls of plain cream shoe boxes up to the ceiling, in the middle a shoe-fitting fluoroscope cabinet one metre tall in light brown walnut veneer with a slanted top, on it three grey-brown rubber viewing hoods, the middle one with a faint green glow deep inside, a small black toggle switch, three horizontal grooves along its side, at its foot a low step edged with chrome and a dark open slot, a pair of small new brown leather shoes on the step, a low fitting stool, a saleswoman's hand in a knitted cardigan sleeve on the switch.
