Daylight, 1941, Southern Pacific GS-4

The streamlined Southern Pacific Daylight locomotive running along the California coast, skirted casing sweeping the full length of the machine, Pacific breakers to one side.

What it was used for
The Coast Daylight between Los Angeles and San Francisco, some 470 miles along the coast.
What was new
The orange-and-red livery was advertising, not engineering — and it worked: the train was named after its locomotive, not the other way round.
