The Moonlit Skyline

The mailroom of a newspaper plant in Newark at midnight in November, flat white light from long fluorescent tubes, on a steel packing table a waist-high stack of broadsheets fresh from the press, folded once and seen edge-on, the top sheet lying at a flat angle and soft in focus, only narrow columns of fine grey type and two dark grey picture blocks, more bundles tied with coarse twine on a steel hand truck, a pressman's hands in ink-smudged rolled shirt sleeves lifting one bundle, behind them a wide steel-framed window, far beyond it across dark marshland the towers of Manhattan black and unlit under a full moon.
