A research laboratory in Wilmington in Delaware on a summer evening, low sun through half-closed venetian blinds in warm stripes and white light from a fluorescent tube above, on a black stone laboratory bench a small thick-walled glass vial with a black ribbed screw cap and a band of blank white paper around its middle, inside it a thin cloudy liquid with a pearly opalescent shimmer, a faint milky film on the inner wall, two woman's hands in the white sleeves of a laboratory coat holding the vial up toward the window and tilting it so the liquid swirls and shimmers, a glass stirring rod and a small beaker beside it.
