The polymerisation hall of a chemical works near Halle on a winter night, the hall empty of people, cold white light from long fluorescent tubes, frost on tall windows, in a row of identical vessels one tall pale blue-grey steel stirred vessel, its domed lid crowded with flanged pipe stubs, above it a tall steel housing for motor and gearbox, the vessel hanging in an open grey steel frame, on its shell a dark rectangular hatch, its round manhole open, beside it on the steel grating a steel ladder, a pair of grey rubber boots standing empty and a grey rubber breathing mask lying on the grating, every surface plain and unmarked.
