A physics laboratory in Manchester on a Friday evening in winter, the window black with rain, white light from a desk lamp and overhead tubes, on a grey laminate bench a heavy black plastic tape dispenser with a slanted side face and a toothed cutting edge at the front, on it a roll of milky translucent sticky tape around a plain cream core, a pulled strip of the tape lying sticky side up with grey flakes of graphite on it, two bare hands pressing a second strip onto a dark lump of graphite, beside them a small clear hinged plastic box holding a tiny glossy blue-black flake, a grey optical microscope behind.
