A tall bright machine hall in the countryside of western Sweden on a clear frosty December afternoon, low pale sun through high multi-paned windows across a concrete floor, a huge black cast-iron alternator with a domed ribbed casing, around it oil pipes, valves and small brass pressure gauges with blank white faces, the cast iron smooth and plain, grey switch cabinets and a large copper coil behind, through the tall window a straight row of six slender steel lattice towers one hundred and twenty-seven metres high, each topped by a wide cross arm, over flat frosted pasture, a hand in a dark wool sleeve pulling a long steel lever.
