A long valve assembly room of an electrical works in Lancashire on a cold December morning, white mist at the high windows, white enamel lamps hanging low over a long wooden bench, seen from straight above the bench, only two women's hands and forearms in pale cotton smock sleeves entering from the lower edge of the frame, the rest of the person outside the picture, holding fine steel tweezers and setting a small grey nickel anode and a spiral wire grid onto the glass stem of an open valve foot, wooden racks of small electrode assemblies of bright wire, a tray of clear glass bulbs, the room beyond empty.
