Six Stages in One Night

A cobbled yard between two-storey studio buildings of pale painted render on the outskirts of London on a grey February morning, their many small-paned windows partly broken, above them collapsed roofs, bent black steel trusses against the overcast sky and crumpled corrugated iron sheds, thin pale smoke drifting from charred beams, wet canvas hoses snaking over the wet cobbles, wooden ladders leaning on a wall, a wooden handcart, scattered planks, at the front right a stack of pale painted scenery flats, the facades bare and plain, the whole yard quiet and deserted.
