A city living room late on a November night, the window covered with black blackout paper, a heavy grey wool blanket draped over the top and sides of a walnut-veneered table radio, its dial glowing warm amber, blank with plain marks, over the large round station knob a small oblong orange-red card ten centimetres wide slid on through a round hole in its centre, a narrow slit running from the hole slantwise to the upper edge, at the top two short thick black bars, below them four rows of fine blurred grey lines, a hand in a knitted cardigan sleeve from the right edge of the frame turning the knob.
