A bare collection office in The Hague on a hot July morning, bright sunlight through tall windows onto scrubbed floorboards, on a long wooden table a home-built radio receiver on a plain pine board, a single glass valve, a coil of copper wire wound on a cardboard tube, a small tuning knob and loose cloth-covered wires, two hands in rolled shirt sleeves with dark wax stains on the fingers pushing the board across the table, beside it a strip of small yellowish paper slips joined along perforations lying flat at an angle, covered in fine faint grey ruled lines, behind them wooden shelves crowded with handed-in cabinet radios, their dials blank.
