A broadcasting house in Berlin on a drizzly October evening, a long five-storey building of pale plaster curving in a quarter circle around a wide square, even rows of square windows in stone frames, taller windows along the top storey, a steep roof with box dormers, at the centre a portal above a broad flight of steps, warm yellow light in a few rows of studio windows on one floor, the rest of the facade dark, the roof edge plain and bare, wet cobbles reflecting the light, bare trees and iron bollards along the square, a single bicycle leaning against a dark street lamp, the square empty.
