The great recording hall of a radio centre on a river bank in east Berlin on a summer evening before a session, warm light from ceiling lamps, walls of honey-coloured wood with tall half-columns and panels of diamond lattice, a deep coffered ceiling, in front a stepped oval recess with a parquet floor for the orchestra, on it rows of bare wooden chairs and bare music stands, two cellos lying on their sides, in the centre a single ribbon microphone in a slim chrome frame on a tall stand, behind it rising rows of upholstered seats, through an open side door a corridor with a small red lamp glowing.
