A vast steel storage hangar in New York on a grey December morning, pale light falling through high open doors onto a bare concrete floor, lying alone on heavy timber blocks a long recovered section of a broadcast antenna mast, an octagonal lattice tube of steel six metres long, painted grey and streaked rust-orange, crushed and twisted along its length, around its outside heavy flanges with thick bolt heads, inside a dense tangle of pipes, torn cables, diamond-pattern steel tread plates and brackets, loose cable ends hanging down, a single gloved hand at the lower edge shining a flashlight into the steelwork, the rest of the hangar empty and quiet.
