A German Reichsbahn class 01 express locomotive standing under a water crane, large smoke deflectors either side of the smokebox, Rhine valley slopes and vineyards beyond.
What it was used for
Deutsche Reichsbahn expresses across the whole network. The reason lay eight years back: the 1920 merger of the state railways brought dozens of incompatible classes from Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, Württemberg and Baden into a single administration.
What was new
The idea was not the individual machine but the standard locomotive: components shared across many classes, so that one spare part fits everywhere. Administration as a design principle.
