Bayerische S 3/6, 1908, Class 18.3

The Royal Bavarian S 3/6 Pacific locomotive, four cylinders and delicate running board valance, standing before an alpine station building with the Bavarian Alps behind.

What it was used for
Bavarian State Railway expresses over the Geislinger Steige and on to Berlin. 159 built between 1908 and 1931 — well beyond the end of the railway she was designed for.
What was new
Four-cylinder compounding: the steam works twice, first in the high-pressure and then in the low-pressure cylinder. Costly to maintain and economical to run — a trade-off every railway administration settled differently.
