A class 50 freight locomotive working a long goods train through the Black Forest, dense spruce on both sides, ten driving wheels turning on a gentle grade.
What it was used for
Freight across the whole Reichsbahn network. 3,164 built between 1939 and 1948.
What was new
Designed in 1939 as a universal peacetime freight locomotive. A few years later it became the template for the war locomotive: over 6,000 components reduced to about 5,000, non-ferrous metal replaced by steel. The peacetime design supplied the frame for wartime mass production.
Connections
Every connection names its kind. “Forerunner” on its own would be a claim.
Made possibleKriegslokomotive1942Class 52 is the simplified wartime version of Class 50, by way of the intermediate 50 ÜK, in which components were dropped step by step.
