1943 · Polish Standard Locomotive · Work 29 of 1,871
A Polish Ty2 freight locomotive shunting in a snowy industrial yard, coal wagons in ranks behind, chimney stacks of a works rising through the haze.
What it was used for
Freight in Poland: more than 1,200 German war locomotives that stood in the country in 1945 and stayed, plus some 200 bought later from the Soviet Union. In 1965, 1,384 were in service — the largest locomotive class Poland ever had.
What was new
Technically nothing. What is remarkable is the duration: machines designed for a few years of war ran in regular Polish service into the 1990s, the last of them around 1999–2000. Fifty-four survive. The throwaway design of work 20, half a century later and in another state.
Connections
Every connection names its kind. “Forerunner” on its own would be a claim.
