A low wooden box carrying two sets of cipher rotors wired in series, each set a row of three brass and bakelite discs side by side under an open hinged lid, a panel of small round lamps above them arranged in a grid, a row of toggle switches beneath the lamps, a large rheostat knob at the left and two battery terminals at the side, cloth covered wires running between the parts, a wooden card index box standing open beside the machine with a stack of blank ruled cards, the rotor rims plain polished metal, all of it on a scrubbed deal table, a single work lamp hanging low over the box, warm brass rims catching the light against the grey painted room behind.
