The Point of Light

A darkened treatment room of a university eye clinic in the Rhineland at noon in summer, blackout curtains drawn, a blade of sunlight across the linoleum, on castors a grey-lacquered sheet-metal cabinet one and a half metres tall under a flat overhanging vent roof, from a round silver-grey ring on its front a black lens tube fifty centimetres long reaching out level, every plate plain and blank, on the sloping lower panel two dials, plain with bare pointers, small red lamps and black knobs, the tube aimed at an empty leatherette headrest, one white point of light on a black cloth, a hand in a white sleeve at a knob.
