A tiled treatment room of a university clinic in Halle at three in the morning, one standing lamp, beside an empty hospital bed with its blanket turned back a cylinder of matt red-brown hard rubber seventy centimetres tall built from stacked rings, held by two broad steel bands with a tension screw, across its top a dark wooden cross, at its centre a threaded spindle with a steel T-handle ending in two orange-red balls, clear tubes curling from the opening and from side spouts, the cylinder on a pale wooden board, a small motor pump on a trolley, a thermos flask, a hand in a white sleeve holding a tube.
