The preparation room of an operating theatre in Glasgow on a dark winter morning, light from high frosted windows and one steel lamp, on a trolley spread with a green cotton drape a soft white tube of knitted polyester yarn finely crimped in close crosswise ribs, a thin violet line spiralling along it, half drawn out of a clear rigid plastic tube with a green cap on its far end, the other green cap beside it, two lengths of orange rubber tubing, one straight, one bent in a U, a curved steel needle holder, fine forceps, a gloved hand holding the free white end, a plain polished steel bowl.
