A research laboratory near Chicago on a grey March afternoon, cool light from ceiling tubes, a thick wall of bare grey concrete with a deep window of slightly greenish heavy glass, above it a long horizontal matt grey steel tube passing through the wall, on this side the operating end with two handgrips with red caps, small rollers and jointed links, a man's hand in a rolled-up white shirt sleeve closing around one grip, beyond the glass the far arm dropping vertically, a thick grey tube ending in small steel tongs holding a glass flask above a steel tray, the far room lit warm, a wooden stool on the concrete floor.
