A high machine room at a university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at noon in winter, flat white daylight from tall industrial windows mixing with ceiling tubes, hanging from a grey steel plate in the ceiling a long many-jointed arm reaching down over a low table, a chain of short bright silver links with small hydraulic pistons and forked joints, wrapped in cream-white spirally braided hoses and thin cable bundles, at its lower end a gleaming silver metal hand with curved fingers lifting a plain unpainted wooden block from a small tower of plain unpainted wooden blocks, behind it a tall grey computer cabinet turned away, its side panel blank.
