A long indoor towing tank of a university laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on a July evening, clear greenish water under fluorescent tubes, just below the calm surface a robot fish one point two metres long hanging from a slender steel strut, a smooth black cone for a head, a pale blue band behind it, then an open framework of silver aluminium rings, white plastic vertebrae, pulleys and thin taut steel cables, black sickle-shaped fins above and below, a large black crescent tail fin mid-stroke, tatters of blue and black fabric skin hanging underneath, faint swirls of blue-green dye behind the tail, two hands in rolled shirt sleeves on a steel carriage above.
