A bedroom of a timber house in the mountains of Colorado at dawn in winter, cold blue light from a window with snowy pine trees outside, on the white ceiling above the door a smoke detector mounted by its flared foot, a tall cream-white plastic cylinder hanging downward, around its middle a ring of vertical slats with gold-coloured wire mesh behind them, near its lower end a small round window with a turning dial, its surface plain and unmarked, a hand in a flannel pyjama sleeve reaching up from a wooden stepladder and turning the dial with two fingers, three small silver cylindrical batteries lying on the top step.
