The Magenta Switches

A narrow corner room of a telephone research laboratory in New Jersey on a bright summer morning, sunlight striped by venetian blinds, a cream-white rack cabinet with black blank panels framed in yellow, at its top a flat computer unit with a black front in a cream-white frame under a plain magenta band, two rows of small glowing lamps, a row of eighteen magenta paddle switches and a small key switch, every surface plain and unmarked, beside it a teleprinter with pale yellow paper curling over its back, a typist in a patterned blouse seen from directly behind, face turned fully away, a hand from the edge lifting one magenta switch.
