The Spare Block

The cramped electronics compartment of a submarine at night, dim red night light and one white work lamp, green-grey walls with cables and pipes, bolted into a steel rack a tall narrow computer unit in an open frame of light grey metal rails, at its top an off-white panel with a row of small red lamps glowing, two rows of square white keys, four rows of silver toggle switches and a round red button, the lower half a smooth pale blue-grey cover, a red-brown carrying handle at the right, every key and surface plain and unmarked, a hand in a blue work sleeve on the handle, a spare unit in an open case.
