The Console at the Masts

The computer room beside the transmitter hall of a radio station on the flat plain of Hungary on a late summer afternoon, low sunlight through a wide window, outside two masts striped red and white above dry grassland, inside a tall narrow light grey console on castors, one metre eighty high, its upper half four horizontal fields with long rows of small lamps glowing amber and white, rotary knobs, toggle switches and a large round selector switch, a field of ventilation slots at the lower left, the lower half a smooth dark grey panel, every surface plain and unmarked, a hand in a rolled sleeve turning one knob, grey tape cabinets behind.
