The Limestone Hall

1895 · Hydroelectric Transformer House · Work 1212 of 1,871

The transformer house of a hydroelectric station at Niagara Falls at sunrise on a frosty late autumn morning, a long low hall of rough-hewn pale grey limestone with a string course, three staggered gable roofs of dark slate, the gable front with a round oculus window and a narrow dark round-arched door, along the side a row of tall round-arched windows with white glazing bars, through one window a row of dark transformers in the dim interior, from the rear wall bare copper lines on white porcelain insulators running to tall wooden poles, hoarfrost on the gravel, a veil of spray drifting from the river in low pink sunlight.
