Steam over the Heath

1915 · Brown Coal Power Station · Work 1219 of 1,871

A new brown coal power station on flat heathland in Saxony at December dusk under thin snow, a tall gabled machine hall of pale rendered walls with red vertical pilaster strips and a window of small glazing bars almost the full gable height, the window glowing warm yellow from arc lamps inside, through it the dark shapes of turbine sets, at its right a long two-storey wing with round windows, an arched gateway, behind the roofs a row of tall chimneys trailing white steam and grey smoke into the low sky, in the foreground tipping wagons heaped with brown coal on a narrow track, a plank site fence, footprints in the snow.
