A laboratory shed behind a private house on a late autumn afternoon, low golden sun through a dusty window, brick wall, wooden floorboards, a cast iron pressure vessel one metre eighty high, bulbous and dark grey-brown, its domed top ringed by bolts, on four slanting iron legs in a flat iron ring on castors, the lower body tapering and streaked with pale run marks, a round front door open on its latch clamps, the cast surfaces smooth and plain, on top a large spoked handwheel, a flanged pipe stub with a valve, on a wooden table a stack of glossy brown pressed discs, a hand in a rolled shirt sleeve on the handwheel.
