The experiment station of a plastics firm in Connecticut on a hazy summer morning, soft light through wire-glass windows, on an oil-stained workbench a cast-iron blow mould with its two halves swung open and an air hose, standing beside it a freshly blown hollow body sixteen centimetres tall and seven wide in thin translucent yellowish-grey plastic, broad and rounded at the base and gently tapering upward, the wall thin and slightly wavy with fine vertical flow streaks, at the top an open irregular frayed rim, a tin tray of small pellets, a blank slip of paper and a pencil, an extrusion press soft behind, hands in leather work gloves at the mould.
