The Interoffice Envelope

A buff envelope closed with a string wound round a button, its face ruled into a grid of small boxes for successive names, most boxes bearing a handwritten line struck through with a single pencil stroke, the last two boxes at the bottom empty, the envelope lying on a blotter beside a wire tray, a pen and a brass inkwell, the desk beneath a tall window on the left, an electric desk lamp with a green glass shade, a typewriter on a stand and steel filing cabinets behind, the office reaching into shadow with dark unlit figures at the far desks.
